Counseling Blues
In the forums, Joanne responded to one member who's seeking for some advice if he needs some counseling to beat depression. She said:
H,
Welcome to our community. We can't give you counseling but we can offer support!
It seems like you've had much more than your fair share of a bad childhood Losing your father, beatings from anyone and everyone who was in a position to stop the beatings, and now failure in school. Your sincerity and earnestness in asking for help is touching. I wish I had an easy answer for you. I don't, but I do have some suggestions for what might seem hard to do, but once started, becomes enormously positive and most people can't imagine going without….
I think asking your physician for help is a good place to start. But why ask for prozac?
I'd encourage you to ask for a referral to ~both~ a psychologist (for talking) and a psychiatrist (for medication). If you are feeling suicidal, there is no time to waste to experimenting to do with anyone but a complete specialist in our professionals.
Most general docs are clueless about what medication to prescribe, which dose to give and why. They usually go with the med suggested by the most recently pharmaceutical representative who came to their office and left free samples. So you might as well play Russian Roulette with that medication.
Here's what I'd do: come right out and tell your doc that you sometimes feel suicidal and want am immediate referral to both a psychologist and a psychiatrist. If you don't get what you are asking for, consider telling you doc that if you kill yourself, it will be on his head. THAT will get you the referrals you ask for or your doc is a moron.
BTW, if you say you are feeling suicidal "right now" the physician (or any professional) can probably have you sent to an institution, so ~just avoid those words~ if they aren't true, and keep insisting for the professionals who can help you the most.
Why the psychologist and psychiatrist? The psychologist will be trained in how to help you change your life situations to make you more successful. The psychiatrist prescribed mood-related medication ~all day long~ and knows the ins and outs of those meds, how much to prescribe and why one over another. Someone who is feeling suicidal needs to make getting this kind of professional help a priority. Your life my depend on it.
Please continue coming back and telling us how things are going. I get the sense from your message that you are tough, and are strong enough to do what I'm suggesting, even if it might be a bit embarrassing. I hope so.
